Second grade students met with their teacher to create a plan for how to make recess more inclusive and enjoyable. Together, they discussed the importance of kindness and decided to build a buddy bench – a place where, if a child is sitting on it alone, it is a signal to the other kids to ask them to play. In order to make their dream a reality, the students held a hot chocolate stand to raise the funds needed for the project. They then worked together, creating signs and a script, and presenting their plan to the school principal for approval. Once approved, they visited a local store to create their very own bench. The whole school is looking forward to having the bench in our recess yard.
The power of Perelman goes beyond the classroom by empowering students to view the world with extraordinary insight and compassion.
