Perelman Hosts World Music Concert to Celebrate Musical Diversity
Perelman hosted our annual World Music Concert this week at the Forman Center, a school tradition that celebrates artists from diverse cultures, ethnicities, and countries. Each year, an artist from a different part of the world teaches a lesson and performs music for our students. This year, the concert featured musician Ximena Violante, who performed Mexican music from the Veracruz region. Through her music and education, Violante creates spaces for people to celebrate their roots, re-imagine their futures, and expand their sense of community.
Students learned about new instruments, the cultural significance of the music, and the region from which it originates. During one portion of the performance, our students enthusiastically joined in keeping the beat to a traditional Jarocho song through a series of steps and stomps.
We are grateful for Perelman alumni parents Mindy Shapiro and Alan Mendelsohn, who generously provide the World Music Concert every year through a fund dedicated to honoring Mindy's beloved sister, Sharon.
