Students in fifth grade were thrilled to virtually meet Dusti Bowling, author of their most recent read aloud Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus. Dusti shared her personal inspiration and passion for writing about all children, and for children with disabilities to see themselves represented in literature. Students asked all kinds of questions about the characters in the book, including one she had never been asked before. They were also shocked to learn that the writing process is long and requires lots of revisions. For this book, Dusti wrote for 2 years, and received 115 rejection letters from publishers and agents. They can't wait to read the forthcoming Aven Green mystery series, and are intrigued by Dusti's current work in progress, which is a scary but humorous book - even though her agent is skeptical about it, the students all want to read it. It was great for students to hear from a real live author that research, revision and perseverance, are an integral part of the writing process that can even challenge award winning authors!
