Constitutional Scholars Debate with Josh Shapiro ’85
Perelman Jewish Day School
Our Forman Center fifth graders engaged in a discussion of constitutional jurisprudence with our own Josh Shapiro ‘85, PA Attorney General. The students matched wits with Mr. Shapiro in a nuanced discussion of First Amendment rights. The class considered questions such as why it is okay to criticize a politician, but not yell “Fire!” in a movie theater; and whether it is legal to burn the American flag? The fifth graders challenged assumptions, asked probing questions and suggested answers to some of the most complicated legal issues of our day. It is no surprise that the class was able to take such a deep dive into the topic -- our students are powered by their experience studying and analyzing ancient texts!
