The Forman Center 4th grade just completed their Realistic Fiction writing unit. Students began by studying the author Jack Gantos and modeling his way of story collecting by creating maps of their own homes. Using their maps, students were able to mine their lives for interesting stories. Throughout the unit, students created characters, plotted a storyline, learned how to properly punctuate dialogue, drafted, revised, and edited.
The unit culminated with a celebration playing musical chairs. When the music stopped, students had to find a story to read. Students didn't get to read each and every writing piece during the party, but they will when their writings are bound and published in books containing the entire class’s writing pieces from the major writing units this year. What an accomplishment and way to celebrate in each other’s success!
