Physical Education/Athletics

Our outstanding physical education curriculum provides students with opportunities to develop physically, socially and emotionally, promoting self-esteem, team building, self-discipline and good sportsmanship. Through physical education classes (taught twice weekly) and other sports activities, students learn to handle defeat with grace and win with humility. It’s no surprise that 80% of our kids participate in interscholastic and afterschool sports.

 

Our program begins with basic hand-eye and hand-foot skills, large and small motor skills and locomotor skills. Students in primary grades start with basic cooperative games as well as lead up activities for team sports. They joyfully engage in intramural sports during recess, coached by older students, under adult supervision.

 

As they progress into older grades, students are introduced to team sports and learn proper techniques, strategies and rules of baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, hockey (floor and field) volleyball, flag football and track and field. They also participate in a variety of “lifetime sports,” such as jogging, bocce ball, badminton, horseshoes and croquet, as we strive to provide our students with athletic experiences they can carry with them into adulthood.

 

All students can participate on athletic teams. We are sensitive to self-esteem issues in emerging adolescents and are therefore committed to ensuring that competitive sports be as inclusive as possible. Our lower school offers afterschool intramurals, while middle school students also compete in interscholastic soccer, basketball, wrestling, softball, baseball and track and field.

 

Our middle school competes regularly with other local independent and public middle schools including Penn Charter, Abington Friends, Cedarbrook Middle School, Calvary Christian Academy, Friends Select and The Shipley School.

 

Perelman Jewish Day School aspires to meet or surpass the physical education national standards of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) in order to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

NASPE’s Standards
Standard 1:
Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2:
Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Standard 3:
Participates regularly in physical activity.

Standard 4:
Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Standard 5:
Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Standard 6:
Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
