Applying to Perelman

How to join the Perelman family

At Perelman, we are home to a broad spectrum of families, with a wide range of socio-economic and religious practices. This diversity strengthens our school and adds a unique dimension to the curriculum.

Students traditionally enter our lower school in kindergarten (Gan) or first grade, choosing either the Forman Center or the Stern Center. Kindergarten students are required to be five years old by August 31st of the year they enter. First graders must be six years old by August 31st of the year they enter. We also welcome new students from other independent and public schools into our dual-language program in any grade, regardless of their Hebrew proficiency.

After completing fifth grade, students from both lower school centers attend our Robert Saligman Middle School, for grades 6-8.

Application Process
There are three main components to the Perelman admission process:
  1. Application, with all accompanying documentation

Kindergarten (Gan)

Students entering Kindergarten are scheduled to take part in one of our Gan Visiting Days. This in-house screening lasts 1 ½ hours and gives the school and students the opportunity to begin to get to know each another. While children visit our Gan classrooms with other applicants, parents are invited to meet informally with administrators, teachers and current parents. Late applicants who miss the scheduled screening may be required to have a psycho-educational evaluation by a licensed psychologist (WPPSII).

First grade

Students entering first grade are scheduled for an individual visit to our school at which they are evaluated for first grade readiness. This screening lasts approximately 1 ½ hours. Applicants to first grade may be required to have a psycho-educational evaluation by a licensed psychologist (WPPSII).

Grades 2-5

Students entering grades 2-5 are required to spend two consecutive days visiting our school. During the visit, applicants participate in all classroom activities. They also meet with reading, math and Judaic studies specialists. Applicants to grades 2-5 may be required to have a psycho-educational evaluation by a licensed psychologist (WISC-III).

Applicants to Perelman are referred to Dr. Davida Harlem, a licensed psychologist, for psycho-educational testing. Dr. Harlem can be reached at 215-947-1236. Families may also see a licensed psychologist of their choice. There is a fee for the evaluation. Families pay the psychologist at the time of the screening.
