Grade
Two
(Kitah Bet) Curriculum
Language Arts
In Second Grade we continue to expose students to a rich literary
environment. We encourage students to become confident and
proficient readers and continue to use a theme approach to
include all aspects of the curriculum. Sample units may include:
Friendship, Thanksgiving, 100 Days of School, Apples, Bats
and All About Us. Our second grade-reading program is a continuation
of first grade. At the beginning of the academic year we review
and reinforce what was taught the year before. Throughout second
grade, we strengthen basic phonics skills and whole word recognition.
Reading is strongly reinforced by dividing students into small
homogeneous groups within the classroom. Later in the year
the students read a "chapter book" and study its
vocabulary. Free reading time is reinforced on a daily basis.
Math
In Second Grade, we review and build upon the foundation
of the previous years. We move towards more sophisticated abstract
thinking, problem solving, computation, analysing strategies
and assessment of math performance. We extend math experiences
using hands on activities, manipulative and practice skills.
Each child has a math box with the tools he/she needs to perform
the math activities introduced in second grade. Students should
feel comfortable and proficient with the skills they are acquiring.
The goal is to teach for understanding and to have the language
to explain math operations. Sample units include: whole numbers,
number relations, place values, computational skills (addition;
subtraction), fractions, graphing/statistics/probability, geometric
relations (metric and non-metric), measurement and time, money,
temperature, and problem solving.
Science
In Second Grade students use the scientific process
to further develop their observation skills while exploring
scientific concepts. Sample units may include: Seeds, Getting
Ready for Winter/Animals in Spring/ Mealworms/Life Cycles,
Plants in Spring, Dinosaurs, Classification and Adaptation,
Measuring Time, Energy - Making Things Move, and Doing
Your Part.
Social Studies
The major goal for Second Grade is for students to
begin seeing the world beyond themselves, as members of a larger
community and to understand their different responsibilities.
Sample units may include: Transportation, Current Events, Holiday
Backgrounds and Celebrations, Goods and Services, Our Community
and Neighborhoods, Occupations, Create or Build a Community
or City, and the Levels of Government
Hebrew Language
Hebrew is taught as a living language and is integrated into
all aspects of the Jewish Studies curriculum. Daily Hebrew
conversational activities are an important part of our program.
Students continue to develop Hebrew reading skills, including
the reading of the Siddur. They learn cursive Hebrew writing
and develop creative writing skills.
Jewish
History, Israel, Jewish Life and Observances
In kitah bet, the major goals are for the students
to become familiar with the history, customs, and brachot (blessings)
for each holiday. They study mitzvot (commandments) between
people and God and between people and Tefillah (prayer). Students
participate in daily t'fillot, including Kabbalat Shabbat.
Jewish History is integrated throughout the Jewish Studies
curriculum in addition to the General Studies curriculum when
the opportunity arises.
Sacred Texts
The curriculum stresses instruction in, and understanding of
ethics, morals and values through intensive exposure to classical
Jewish text. The Parashat Hashavua (the weekly Torah portion)
is discussed. Students begin an introduction to the book of
Beresheit (Genesis.)
